Mad Men Season 3 episode 11 recap

This episode was well done and it showed why “Mad Men” is the one of the best shows on television.

It was good to be Roger Sterling this week. While at work he seems to be not needed or wanted, this changed with an appearance of an old flame, Annabelle. She comes in wanting a campaign ad for her fathers company that she inherited. But, that was just a ploy to see Roger and an excuse to spark things up again.

After a proposed “business” dinner, Annabelle tries to convince Roger to rekindle what they had. Surprisingly, Roger tells Annabelle that he’s recently married, a newlywed, and that he’s still honeymooning. Who knew a guy could say no?

We also get the return of Joan.  Having a husband who is not providing and is overall pathetic, she calls Roger as he his practicing hitting some golf balls in his office. Roger tells Joan she’s lucky he picked up. But, Joan being all knowing of Sterling/Cooper, knew his secretary would be out. Roger loves that Joan called asking for help trying to find a new job. Boy, Roger sure does really feel wanted this week.

We see Don waiting inside Suzanne’s place. Once Suzanne gets home they embrace and kiss. At this point we see that Suzanne wants more than the current relationship she has with Don. She is upset and then later says I’m sure it’ll go away. Sounds like trouble. Don suggests they go on a short trip.

Don arrives outside his home with Suzanne. Don says he’ll be right back. Suzanne then slides down a bit in her seat as not to be seen. Seems like she’s done this before. Don walks in and he hears Sally call out “Daddy?” Betty walks in. Uh-oh. She’s all business. Don tries to leave saying he forgot his hat, but Betty is not having any of that right now.

Betty walks into Don’s office in their home and tells him to open the drawer. Don tells her that my drawer, its private. Betty replies with you know I know what’s in there. Don blown away in a state of shock looks on as Betty takes out the box with Don’s secrets. He leaves to go get a drink. He tries to take out a cigarette and drops it. He’s looking out the window and I thought Don might be scheming a way to get out of this with his great “storytelling abilities.” But, Don tells Betts the truth. I noticed Betty’s anger drop when Don was telling her about his brother hanging himself.

To end the episode we see the Draper family out trick-or-treating. Sally is a gypsy and Bobby is a hobo. Maybe a depiction of Don in his early years? As the children receive their candy, the man at the door then looks back at Don and asks who are you suppose to be? With a nice shot slowly zooming in at Don as the episode ends.

Where does Don go from here? Can he live a better life now that Betty knows his secret? Does he continue his current ways or does he go on as though nothing happened? The next two episodes should be great.
